Maritime Safety Queensland - Dangers for boaters in flood conditions

With the recent flooding in areas of Queensland, boaters should avoid heading out on the waterways unless necessary. This is particularly important in areas such as the Brisbane River, Moreton Bay and surrounding waterways. There is a strong current in the river and alot of debris in the water with many submerged objects that are not visible which are a danger to boaters. Buoys and beacons have also been damaged or destroyed and should not be relied on for safe navigation. The port of Brisbane remains closed to shipping until further notice. Further updates will be provided on Monday 17 January 2011. Maritime Safety Queensland circulates marine safety information to mariners, organisations and other interested parties, in the form of Notices to Mariners. Current navigation warnings and hazards can be viewed online from the Notices to Mariners link.
